About Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos is a fishing village west of Funchal, immortalised by Winston Churchill, who painted here in 1950. The small harbour shelters colourful boats beneath volcanic cliffs, and the old centre keeps traditional taverns where locals drink poncha, the regional spirit made with aguardente, honey and lemon. The municipality stretches up to Cabo Girão — one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe at 580 m — and the wine-growing area of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, producing the grapes used for Madeira wine.
