About Ponta do Sol
Ponta do Sol is a town on Madeira's south coast, named for having the highest number of sunshine hours in the archipelago. The historic centre of colourful houses by the sea has a natural pool and a black pebble beach. The municipality includes the remote village of Madalena do Mar, founded by Polish refugees in the 15th century, and climbs up the slopes through banana and sugarcane plantations to the rural zone of Canhas. The John Dos Passos Cultural Centre pays tribute to the American writer whose roots were in the parish.
