São Jorge is a peaceful parish perched on Madeira's rugged north coast between São Vicente and Santana — the village church stands above sheer basalt cliffs, and the surrounding valleys are terraced with vineyards and banana plantations. The area is threaded with levada walks through laurisilva forest and offers sweeping views across the Atlantic. Away from the main tourist circuit, São Jorge retains an authentic rural character that is increasingly rare on the island.
