Ponta Delgada on Madeira's north coast is a world apart from its Azorean namesake — a small, remote village perched on the clifftops above the crashing Atlantic, with waterfalls cascading nearby and the laurisilva forest pressing in from the mountains above. The village church, isolated in its dramatic setting, and the wild north coast road make this one of the most atmospheric and least-visited corners of Madeira.
