Ponta do Sol is the sunniest village in Madeira — sheltered by high cliffs that block the clouds, the village basks in more sunshine than anywhere else on the island. The terraced hillsides above the village are planted with lemon and banana groves, the ancestors of John dos Passos (the American novelist) came from here and the black pebble beach and seafront square have a quietly magical atmosphere.
