Ribeira Grande is the second-largest city in the Azores and the main hub of São Miguel's north coast. The historic centre features baroque stone bridges over the river, 18th-century churches and the Casa do Arcano — a unique wax-art nativity scene. The municipality is home to the Gorreana tea factory (Europe's only continuously operating tea plantation), the Lagoa do Fogo (inside the Fogo volcano) and the best surf beaches in the Azores, such as Santa Bárbara and Monte Verde.
