Ribeira Grande is the second city of São Miguel and the historic centre of the island's north coast — its elegant baroque and 18th-century architecture reflects the prosperity of past centuries, thermal springs bubble through the town and the dramatic north coast cliffs and black sand beaches give the area a wilder character than the sheltered south.
