Porto Formoso is a parish on the north coast of São Miguel, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, famous for the Fábrica de Chá Porto Formoso — one of the only tea plantations in Europe still in commercial production. The rows of tea bushes descending the green hillsides to the Atlantic create a landscape unique on the European continent. The village retains the quiet, genuine character of São Miguel's north coast communities, with black basalt cliffs and the ever-present ocean.
