About Vila do Porto
Vila do Porto is the main and oldest town on Santa Maria, the southernmost and oldest island of the Azores. The historic centre preserves 16th-century houses, the São Francisco Convent and Church and the São Brás Fort. The municipality includes the famous Praia Formosa — the only white-sand beach in the Azores — Vila Franca Islet, the Anjos geological formations (where Christopher Columbus landed in 1493) and the Barreiro da Faneca, a "red desert" unique in the archipelago.
