Capelo sits at the westernmost tip of Faial, dominated by the spectacular Capelinhos volcano — whose 1957–58 eruption buried the village in ash and added a new tongue of land to the island's edge. The lunar landscape of black scoria and volcanic ash, the lighthouse and the modern Volcanism Interpretation Centre make this one of the most dramatic and unique sites in the Azores. Coastal erosion constantly reshapes this new land, making the landscape a living document of volcanic power.
