About Capelo
Capelo is the westernmost parish of Faial, where a 1957-58 submarine eruption gave birth to the Capelinhos Volcano — the most recent in Portugal. Today you can visit the interpretation centre buried in the volcanic ash, walk across the lunar landscape the eruption created and see the half-buried old lighthouse. The surrounding area is part of the Faial Natural Park, with hiking trails exploring this unique testimony to Azorean geology.
