About São Vicente
São Vicente is a town and municipality on Madeira's north coast, famous for the São Vicente Caves and Volcanism Centre — a network of lava tubes formed 890,000 years ago that visitors can walk through, ending at an opening onto the ocean. The town sits at the mouth of the São Vicente stream, in a lush green valley ringed by volcanic peaks, and preserves the 17th-century Church of São Vicente Ferrer, the Casa dos Pomares and a small fishing harbour. The coastline includes the black-sand Fajã da Areia beach and dramatic cliffs above the Atlantic.
