About Machico
Machico was the first capital of Madeira and the spot where, in 1419, Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed and began the settlement of the island. The town, tucked into a deep valley on the east coast, preserves the Chapel of Miracles, the Main Church (one of the oldest on Madeira) and the Amparo Fort. Machico Beach, with golden sand imported from Morocco, and the fishing harbour are the heart of local life. To the east stretches the arid Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, a hikers' paradise.
