About Sines
Sines is a coastal town in the Alentejo, birthplace of Vasco da Gama — the navigator who discovered the sea route to India. Despite its large industrial port, Sines preserves a charming old town with a medieval castle, the Vasco da Gama Museum and panoramic views over the Atlantic. The town hosts the annual Festival Músicas do Mundo, one of Portugal's premier world-music events. Nearby, São Torpes Beach is famous for its warm waters (heated by a nearby power plant) and consistent surf, while Porto Covo to the south offers pristine Alentejo coast scenery.
