Sines is the birthplace of Vasco da Gama — the great explorer who opened the sea route to India was born in the castle that still overlooks the Atlantic. Today Sines is Portugal's largest industrial port and an energy hub, but the historic centre, the castle, the beautiful beaches of São Torpes and the world music Festival Músicas do Mundo keep it on the cultural map.
