About Madalena do Mar
Madalena do Mar is a small parish of the Ponta do Sol municipality, on Madeira's south coast, wedged between banana plantations and the Atlantic Ocean. According to tradition, it was founded in the 15th century by Henrique Alemão — identified by some historians as Polish king Władysław III, who is said to have survived the Battle of Varna in 1444 and taken refuge on Madeira. The village has a small pebble beach, colourful houses and the Chapel of Santa Catarina, in one of the island's most authentic and least touristy corners.
