About Faial
Faial is a parish of the Santana municipality, on Madeira's north coast, set in a natural amphitheatre between mountains and the sea. It is dominated by Penha d'Águia, a 590 m rock massif that separates it from Porto da Cruz, and by the Castelo viewpoint, which offers one of the most dramatic views of the north coast. The parish follows the Faial stream and includes small rural hamlets, terraced banana plantations and trails down to the fajãs. It is an essential stop along the scenic ER101 road that runs along the island's northern shore.
