About Lajes do Pico
Lajes do Pico is the former whaling capital of the Azores, on the south coast of Pico island. The Whalers' Museum, housed in the old boathouses, tells the story of the whaling industry that drove the local economy until 1987. Today the town is one of the Atlantic's leading cetacean-watching bases, with daily trips to see whales, sperm whales and dolphins. Mount Pico — Portugal's highest peak at 2351 m — dominates the horizon.
