About Angra do Heroísmo
Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira island, is the oldest city in the Azores and was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 for its Renaissance street grid and colourful historic houses. Visit the Cathedral, the Palace of the Captains-General, the Duque da Terceira Garden and climb Monte Brasil — a volcanic caldera rising straight out of the sea. Don't miss the São João festivities in June, with street bullfights on a rope, and try the traditional Terceira alcatra, slow-cooked in a clay pot.
