What You Can See

Live view of Faro's Manuel Bivar Garden and marina, the gateway to the Algarve, with the Ria Formosa nature reserve stretching behind.

About Faro

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and the region's main gateway, with an international airport by the edge of the Ria Formosa. The walled old town — the Vila-Adentro — preserves the Cathedral, the Arco da Vila gate and the Municipal Museum housed in a former convent. The Bone Chapel, Jardim Manuel Bivar beside the marina and boat trips to the Ria Formosa barrier islands (Deserta, Farol, Culatra) are must-do visits. Be sure to try cataplana seafood stew and the traditional fig and almond sweets, hallmarks of Algarve cuisine.
