About Castro Marim
Castro Marim is a historic border town at the eastern tip of the Algarve, next to the mouth of the Guadiana River and directly opposite Ayamonte in Spain. Its imposing medieval castle and the São Sebastião Fort bear witness to the town's strategic role in defending the kingdom and its link to the Order of Christ, founded here in 1319. The Castro Marim Salt Marsh Nature Reserve protects one of Portugal's most important salt-marsh ecosystems, home to flamingos, storks and wading birds, and produces the PDO Flor de Sal of Castro Marim.
