Castro Marim guards the eastern edge of the Algarve at the mouth of the Guadiana river — the twin medieval castles (one built by the Order of Christ) overlook the extensive salt pans of the Castro Marim Nature Reserve, where flamingos, spoonbills and dozens of wading bird species feed in the shallows. The frontier town's medieval fair in August is one of the most atmospheric in Portugal.
