About Caniço
Caniço is a town in the Santa Cruz municipality, just 10 minutes from Funchal, famous for the Reis Magos Beach in Caniço de Baixo — one of Madeira's best dive sites, within the Garajau Nature Reserve. Above the cliffs rises the imposing Cristo Rei statue, overlooking the ocean. The area combines seaside tourism with the old village centre, the Holy Spirit Church and the Garajau clifftop walks, in a zone increasingly popular with visitors looking to stay near Funchal but away from the busiest tourist areas.
