Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of São Miguel Island until the 1522 earthquake buried it — the rebuilt town retains a quiet dignity and overlooks one of the Azores' most iconic sights: the Vila Franca Islet, a perfectly round submerged volcanic crater whose sheltered lagoon is a protected marine reserve and one of the most unusual swimming spots in the archipelago.
