Marinha Grande is the heart of Portugal's glassmaking tradition — the Royal Glass Factory dates back to the 18th century, when the Stephens brothers turned it into an industrial hub. The royal pine forest of Pinhal de Leiria stretches from the town to the sea, where two of the Silver Coast's most popular beaches lie: São Pedro de Moel, with its lighthouse on the cliffs, and Praia da Vieira, at the mouth of the River Lis, where arte xávega seine fishing is still practised.
