Vila Real is the gateway to the Douro wine valley — the baroque Solar de Mateus, immortalised on the famous Mateus rosé wine label, sits just outside the city. The Alvão Natural Park rises above the Corgo gorge, the Douro vineyards begin just south and the city itself has a fine historic centre with a cathedral cloister.
