Sousel is a small, unhurried village in the Alto Alentejo — set between the marble towns of Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa and the rolling plains of the Alentejo interior, its whitewashed streets and parish church represent the unspoilt rural Portugal that is increasingly hard to find. Cork oaks shade the roads and the sky here is vast and luminous.
