São Roque do Pico was once one of the Azores' most important whaling villages — the former whale factory is now the superb Whalers' Museum, one of the best in the world, telling the story of the centuries-long tradition of whale hunting that defined life on Pico. Today whale watching boats go out in search of sperm whales, dolphins and other cetaceans in the deep waters off the island.
