São Matias is a small parish in the municipality of Beja, in the heart of the Baixo Alentejo. The Beja Municipal Aerodrome — built on the site of the former Air Base No. 11 — is a landmark of Portuguese aviation history and the main point of interest for the locality's webcams. Surrounding the aerodrome, the vast Alentejo plains stretch to the horizon, carpeted in spring with wildflowers and golden wheat in summer.
