São Mateus da Calheta is one of Terceira's most picturesque fishing villages — its small sheltered harbour served for centuries as the island's gateway for navigators arriving from the south and west. The village retains a genuine maritime character, with its whitewashed houses and the Church of São Mateus overlooking the coast. The views across the Atlantic and towards Terceira's interior mountains are breathtaking.
