Povoação is the oldest settlement in the Azores — the first Portuguese settlers landed here on São Miguel in the 15th century, giving the place its name ("settlement"). The town sits in a deep valley on the wild southeastern coast, surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery on the island, with cliffs dropping into the Atlantic and the lush volcanic interior rising steeply behind.
