Porto da Cruz is one of Madeira's most authentic villages — the striking Penha de Águia (Eagle Rock) dominates the landscape, the last traditional sugarcane distillery on Madeira still produces aguardente and the north coast waves make it a popular surf spot. The village church, the seafront and the terraced banana and sugarcane plantations climbing the steep hillsides represent Madeira's traditional rural life.
