Portalegre is the distinguished capital of the Alto Alentejo — its Gothic-Renaissance cathedral, the 16th-century castle and the mansions of its historic centre reflect a prosperous past, while the Real Fábrica de Tapeçarias produces internationally celebrated Gobelin-style tapestries. The city sits at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede, Portugal's most southerly mountain range.
