Montemor-o-Novo was an important strategic town throughout Portuguese history — its hilltop castle, now spectacularly ruined, was where São João de Deus, founder of the Brothers Hospitallers, was born. The town sits at the crossroads of the Alentejo, surrounded by the cork oak and holm oak woodlands that define the Alto Alentejo landscape.
