Gavião perches above the Tagus river where it flows through a deep gorge at the edge of the Alto Alentejo — the medieval castle overlooks the river and the schist villages of the Beira Baixa visible on the far bank. The Tagus International Natural Park nearby protects one of Europe's most important habitats for the black stork and the Spanish imperial eagle.
