Fátima is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world — in 1917, three shepherd children reported apparitions of Our Lady on thirteen separate occasions. The vast Sanctuary, with its colonnaded esplanade larger than St Peter's Square in Rome, receives millions of pilgrims each year, with the May and October festivities drawing the largest crowds.
