Estremoz is the queen of the Alentejo marble towns — the medieval castle keep towers above the upper town, now a magnificent pousada, while the lower town's Saturday market overflows with the charming painted clay figurines (bonecas de Estremoz) that are among Portugal's most beloved folk art. The white, pink and grey marble quarries surrounding the town are still active.
