Crato was the grand priory of the Knights Hospitaller in Portugal — the medieval town was the heart of the order's power in the country, and the spectacular fortified monastery of Flor da Rosa, now a dramatic pousada, stands just outside the village. The surrounding Alto Alentejo landscape is one of the most serene in Portugal.
