Castro Verde is the capital of the Baixo Alentejo steppe — the vast open plains surrounding the town form a Special Protection Area that is Europe's most important habitat for the Great Bustard, the Little Bustard and other grassland birds. The golden cereal fields and cork oak woodlands create one of Portugal's most distinctive landscapes.
