Caldas da Rainha owes its name and existence to Queen Leonor — the queen founded Europe's first purpose-built thermal hospital in 1484 after discovering the hot springs. The town is also celebrated for its irreverent ceramic tradition, including the cheeky pottery immortalised by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, and its famous daily market.
