Beja was the Roman Pax Julia — one of Portugal's oldest cities, with one of the Alentejo's finest medieval castles rising above wheat plains that stretch to the horizon. The Castle Keep, from which Spanish mountains are visible on clear days, and the Regional Museum housed in a 13th-century convent are among its highlights. Beja boasts some of the bluest skies in Portugal.
