Avis gave its name to one of Portugal's greatest royal dynasties — the Order of Avis, which ruled Portugal through its golden age of exploration, was founded at the castle that still stands here. The Maranhão reservoir surrounding the village on three sides creates a beautiful lake landscape, and the cork oak woodlands of the Alto Alentejo stretch in every direction.
