Alter do Chão is home to the Alter Real — one of the world's most elegant horse breeds, developed here by the House of Braganza in 1748 and still bred at the royal stud farm on the edge of the village. The 14th-century castle, the Roman ruins of Alter Praesidium and the gentle Alentejo countryside make this small town a place of quiet distinction.
