Alandroal guards the Guadiana river on the border with Spain — its sturdy 13th-century castle, built by the Order of Avis, looks over the river and the Spanish plains beyond. The surrounding countryside is classic Alentejo: cork oaks, olive groves, golden fields and a silence broken only by birdsong.
